URSAPHARM provides holistic therapy concept for healthy eyelids
Saarbrücken, September 24, 2024. The pharmaceutical manufacturer URSAPHARM has expanded its “concept for healthy eyelids”. The comprehensive and coordinated therapeutic approach for the individual treatment and care of lid margin inflammation (blepharitis) and meibomian gland dysfunction has been complemented by the product EvoTears® OMEGA eye drops. The extended treatment concept includes products for heat treatment, daily lid margin hygiene and care as well as for the treatment of eyelid diseases, which are used as part of three therapy options that build on each other – a basic therapy, a further pharmacological therapy and a complementary therapy. The aim of the concept is to treat the individual complaints of patients with eyelid diseases such as blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, hordeolum or chalazion in an effective and well-tolerated manner. Dryness, burning, itching, redness or swelling can be alleviated, the function of the meibomian glands improved and tear film stability increased. The interaction of cosmetics, medical devices and medicinal products can achieve good treatment adherence, which is essential for chronic diseases, especially in intervals with few symptoms. URSAPHARM is accompanying the launch and presentation of the revised “concept for healthy eyelids” with various marketing measures.
The therapy options: basic therapy, further pharmacological and complementary therapy
The basic therapy, consisting of heat treatment and subsequent lid margin hygiene, should be carried out daily in the morning and evening. The new POSIFORLID® eye mask is well suited for heat treatment. This is followed by cleansing and care with POSIFORLID® eyelid hygiene wipes and POSIFORLID® eye spray. The eye spray can also provide support during the day by soothing irritated eyelids. Regular cleansing and care is also recommended during symptom-free phases in order to maintain or improve the function of the meibomian glands. In combination, the three products in the POSIFORLID® range enable comprehensive lid margin hygiene and eyelid care.
In case of irritation of the eyelids, Posiformin® 2 %, eye ointment* can be used in further pharmacological therapy. It is recommended to prevent the spread of germs, which can be caused by secretions escaping from the glands at the edge of the eyelid. It has an antiseptic and anti-secretory effect and reliably protects the mucous membrane of the eye.
Many patients with meibomian gland dysfunction or chronic blepharitis suffer from dry eyes caused by a lipid phase disorder. In these cases, EvoTears® OMEGA eye drops are recommended as a complementary therapy to stabilise the lipid phase. The eye drops act as a complementary product to the POSIFORLID® range within the concept.
An overview of the individual products and their effectiveness
POSIFORLID® eye mask (medical device)
The self-heating POSIFORLID® eye mask enables simple and effective heat treatment for blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, hordeolum and chalazion. It emits a constant heat of approximately 45°C for 10 minutes. Moistened cotton pads placed in the mask create a warm, moist climate. This helps to soften crusts or deposits on the lid margin and loosen the accumulated secretion in the meibomian glands. By subsequently massaging the eyelids, the liquefied secretion can be removed from the sebaceous glands. The constant heat also promotes blood circulation to the lid margins. The heat treatment thus supports the maintenance and improvement of the function of the meibomian glands and should be applied twice daily (morning and evening). The mask can be reused up to 90 times.
POSIFORLID® eyelid hygiene wipes (cosmetic)
POSIFORLID® eyelid hygiene wipes are pre-moistened, sterile disposable wipes for the gentle removal of deposits (e.g. dust, pollen) and incrustations on the eyelids or between the eyelashes. They are suitable for cleansing and caring for the edges of the eyelids in cases of blepharitis and soothe and moisturise irritated lid skin. The ingredients hyaluronic acid, horsetail and euphrasia have an antioxidant effect and can soothe irritation of the skin. POSIFORLID® eyelid hygiene wipes are used after heat treatment and massage to cleanse the eyelids.
POSIFORLID® eye spray (cosmetic)
POSIFORLID® eye spray is based on the ingredients euphrasia, salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid. It can simply be sprayed onto the closed eye for soothing care. It gently dissolves deposits on the eyelids and between the eyelashes and soothes irritated eyelids at the same time. Thanks to its uncomplicated application, the eye spray makes daily eyelid care a quick and easy routine, whether at home or on the go.
Posiformin® 2 %, eye ointment1 (medicinal product)
Chronic blepharitis is often accompanied by swollen, reddened and itchy lid margins, the lid margins and eyelashes are sticky. If the secretion accumulates at the glands at the edge of the eyelid, inflammatory changes can occur, leading to swelling of the edge of the eyelid, deposits and blockage of the meibomian glands. Posiformin® 2 %, eye ointment is a preservative-free eye ointment that is very suitable for use in lid margin inflammation due to the antiseptic and secretion-inhibiting effect of bibrocathol. The active ingredient bibrocathol contained in Posiformin® 2 %, eye ointment disinfects the irritated edge of the eyelid and the neighbouring conjunctiva, has an astringent and anti-secretory effect and creates the conditions for a rapid and complication-free resolution of the symptoms. Posiformin® 2 %, eye ointment thus offers reliable protection against irritation of the outer eye. The eye ointment has been available in Germany for more than 50 years and its effectiveness and tolerability have been confirmed by several studies.
EvoTears® OMEGA eye drops (medical device)
EvoTears® OMEGA stabilises the lipid layer of the tear film and reduces the evaporation of the underlying aqueous layer. The eye drops spread quickly and cover the tear film like a protective layer. This replenishes the impaired lipid layer and counteracts premature evaporation. EvoTears® OMEGA moistens and protects the surface of the eye, thereby alleviating the symptoms of dry eyes, e.g. burning eyes, itching, tearing and foreign body sensation. The topical administration of the 0.2 % omega-3 leads to significant improvements in corneal damage and reduces inflammatory messenger substances.2
Accompanying marketing measures
The “concept for healthy eyelids” has been presented to German ophthalmologists since the beginning of 2024 by means of a symposium at the congress of the Augenärztliche Akademie Deutschland (AAD) on 8 March 2024, dialogues at other specialist congresses, various specialist advertisements and a special publication. In addition, the concept and products have been publicised via the sales force and in medical software. Sample bags containing EvoTears® OMEGA, POSIFORLID® eyelid hygiene wipes and an information flyer will be made available to patients, and a discount campaign for POSIFORLID® eyelid hygiene wipes will run from April to June 2024. With the help of videos on the websites POSIFORLID.de/en and ursapharm.de/en, patients can also find out how to use the POSIFORLID® eye mask or POSIFORLID® eye spray correctly.
